Dashes might be thought pauses, because in manuscript form dashed words do not seem to have the same isolation. So perhaps her pen was just resting on the page so the dashes were perhaps just the pen resting on the page. Hymnic quatrain verse form typical of emily dickinson. Whitman of course, had no sense of dickinson as she was unpublished. Dickinson s father determined a lot of her reading etc. Dickinson s mother was around but she just only ever wrote about her father. However, she didn t write as if her household were oppressive. Whitman s double-vision, the outwards/inwards and the blending of both. Naming yourself as nobody, taking on an identity as such. After she erases herself as an individual she makes a connection with someone else who is also a nobody. Contrast to whitman who is a somebody and says others are somebodies also.
