Ideology defined as a system of ideas that unconsciously shapes and constrains our beliefs and behaviors is the sets of beliefs underlying the customs, habits, and practices common to a given culture. To members of that culture, the beliefs seem obviously true, natural, and universally applicable. They may seem just as obviously arbitrary, idiosyncratic, and false to those who adhere to another ideology. Ideologies may be forcefully imposed or willingly subscribed to. Their component beliefs may be held consciously or unconsciously. It limits the range of acceptable and even conceivable ideas (gender) It normalizes (e. g. , naturalizes) particular sets of social relations natural order of things e. g. teacher has higher authority over student. It privileges some interests over others dominating (socially powerful) vs. minority (socially less powerful) eg. heterosexual marriages vs. homosexual marriages or men s physical strength and independence creates difficult situations for women seeking promotion.
