Experiment: type of research where the researcher manipulates one or more independent variables. Experimental (or treatment) group the group that is manipulated. Control group the group that is not manipulated. Must note that experiments are not real life, the experimental setting changes the results. Benefits of survey research: cost effective, generalizable, investigate numerous independent. Limitations: lake of tight control, lack of cause and effect. Describe the content of previously produced messages. May study the content of books, magazines, newspapers, films, radio, broadcasts, photographs, cartoons, letters, etc. Benefits: may be the only method available, broad range of texts , access to deeper contextualized meanings. Limitations: time consuming, tedious, interpretation, small sample-sizes. Research where the researcher actually participates in the daily life of the people under study (openly or covertly) Benefits: insider perspective, contextual depth, observe changes over time. Limitations: ethical concerns, time consuming, external validity, small sample size. Research done using data collected by another researcher.
