Document Summary

Neuropeptide (neurohormone) which is why it has the central (brain) role. Prairie voles and oxytocin: prairie voles are monogamous; montane voles were swingers. In humans, oxytocin increase, cortisol decrease (inverse relationship) Changes in oxytocin predict bonding-related thoughts and interactive behaviour to both fetus during late pregnancy and newborn in first postpartum month. Parent behaviour marked by contingent responsiveness facilitates development of dyadic systems and mutual regulation. Stress -> brain -> hypothalamus -> pituitary gland -> adrenal glands (in your back) -> cortisol (-> hippocamps (which can regulate cortisol which can also inhibit itself from stress response)) Approximately 5-7% are born prematurely and will encounter some # of stressful events. On average, preterm infants will perform less well overall on social-cognitive domains: slowing info processing. Preterm receive, sometimes, injection of steroids when still in womb, which decreases mortality but contribute to dysregulation of stress system: steroids act as cortisol. Strange situation: saliva collected before ss started and immediately after procedure.
