Lecture 40, part 2 america in world war ii. Pearl harbor the first of several successful japanese attacks in the pacific. Maybe west coast of the mainland: fear of japanese americans, image developed of the japanese being devious. Permanent changes as result of the war: united states increased military arsenal to huge proportions, mass hysteria towards japanese americans, civil rights of japanese. Americans violated: atomic bomb, american isolationism gone; us has to be involved in the world, increase in prestige for american military, ties with industry become closer, increase in government involvement in the economy. Social changes as a result of the war. Social responses to the war: unprecedented unity within the us, common sense of danger, west coast invasion, heightened use of images as propaganda for the war. War bonds, v for victory: more women entered the workforce. Entering jobs that were seen as male job. Expected to give jobs back to men when they came back.
