Document Summary
Family is a durable institution- refuses emotional gratification, a refuge for safety and protection. Family is not what it used to be before- it is a set of social relationships that change with time. There are some things that cannot change: family continues to reproduce, families continue to be agents of socialization, they continue to provide safety for their members , they will be important elements of society. Once, having more children was a source of pride- means of owning property. Economic situation- people cannot raise as many children. Because now punishment is considered taboo, children are as they used to considered autonomous in their own right. In some cultures, there is payment for the bride- that is now disappearing: extended family: interdependent family. Share same residence and resource: census family married/in cohabitation for more than one year doesn"t include aunts, uncles, cousins. Predicted that industrial influences are effective impacts on families, especially the development of women"s role in society.
