VIC101H1 Chapter : The Monster Lecture on Justice and the Law
Document Summary
Durrenmatt"s the monster lecture on justice and the law. Man forms 2 concepts of himself: one particular and existential, the other universal and logic. Man broadens his i to a we w/ whom je then identifies himself, and reduces humanity as a whole, to which eh also belongs, to the others, w/ whom he does not identify himself. Man sets up emotional realities: the more intimate we and the more general us, the more intimate enemy and the more general others. To the we belong spouse, family, friends, etc; to the us belong one"s own tribe, countrymen, race, etc. Emotional side of politics is just as powerful as the economic side: the state become the native soil, the fatherland. The state becomes the fatherland, for which one kills and is willing to be killed, happy even as the death blow falls.
