Document Summary
Free will: the ability to make choices about our own lives. Compatibilism: a determined future is compatible with free will. Early defenders of compatibilism: thomas hobbes (1588-1679, john locke (1632-1704, david hume (1711-1776) An action is free if: the action is caused by the will of the agent, the action is performed without constraints. Caused actions can be free, but only when they are produced by authentic desires. Problems for compatibilism: can our actions be free if they are determined by the past, determinism is not compatible with moral responsibility. ( consequence argument ) Libertarianism: some actions are not determined by previous events; uncaused actions are an expression of free will, not randomness.
