1993 - 29% of women reported being physical and/or sexually assaulted by partners. 2001 69 men killed their current/ex-wives (up from 52 the previous year: a large number of severe/fatal injuries to children occur in these families as well. 1999 half a million children in canada were reported to have heard or witnessed an assault on their parent in the previous 5 years. 50% of men who frequently assaulted their partners were also reported to abuse their children. Substance abuse, mental health issues, and violence all intersect and affect one another. Only 13% of abused women in ontario access shelters. Children exposed to woman abuse have comparable levels of emotional and behavioural problems in comparison to children who are directly abused. 40% of women abused during pregnancy reported the abuse started when they were pregnant. 95% of abusers within intimate relationships are men.
