God was to contravene with the laws of nature in order to achieve his will. Some believers welcomed the proofs of god such as reality and power, while others were embarrassed by them. If they deny that god acts on special interventions, then their faith is also questioned. Theologians chose between a capricious, wonder working, tinkering god or an absent, uninterested undetectable one. A miracle is in the eye of the believer. Drummond - the product of love is the real miracle. God should be seen in human knowledge, not human ignorance. Drummond- the god of evolution is grander than the occasional wonder worker. Leibniz - god as a clock maker, saw gods involvement in he universe as perfect. Charles darwin- god as the author of the laws nature. Envisioned nature as a system of mechanical interactions governed by mathematical laws, strongest possible evidence of divine power and intelligence. God is he designer and lawgiver rather than a wonder worker.
