Change in a gene pool from a situation where there exist at least two variants of a particular gene (allele) to a situation where only one of the alleles remains. Type of natural selection in which individuals near one end of the phenotypic spectrum have highest relative fitness. Shifts trait away from existing mean toward the favored extreme. Body size of guppies promote directional section for larger body size. Type of natural selection in which individuals expressing intermediate phenotype have highest relative fitness. Birth mass of human baby ideal fitness is intermediate mass. Type of natural selection in which individuals with expressing extreme phenotypes have highest relative fitness. Alleles producing these become more common promotes polymorphism. Less common mode of natural selection than directional or stabilizing.
