This disease is endemic in all countries in the world where they raise pigs. When humans defecate outside, the pigs eat human feces, and this is how they get infected. Also, with this worm the adult is in the human. In other hydatid diseases, humans get infected by the oocyst. How the life cycle of the parasite is maintained. They can release the eggs (thick, can survive for months) or parts of the worm in feces. This parasite can also spread with contact from human to human. Also, when people eat undercooked meat or pork containing the larvae, this can infect people as well. It is hard to diagnose by looking at the stool of the people. So, this disease was under-reported until 1990, when people got access to x-rays and ct scans. Some parts of south and central america, and sub-saharan africa and asia are infected. It is also prevalent in some eastern countries in europe.
