Document Summary
4) working jobs become tightly bound with education. 5) education entails transmission of culture from present to upcoming generations. 6) primary socialization we receive is family (what you learn from parents, grandparents and siblings). This is also informal and casual education (ex: not getting lectured by family). 7) what we will in education is formalized and deliberate. From ages 5-18, school isn"t a voluntary exercise; rather the government says you must attend. Kids do drop out and they are prosecuted by the state. Three themes: selection, socialized and social organization: selection. Reason we are interested in school is because one important thing schools do is they select and saw out different groups of individual students. Education selection is important to improve and describe the sort of education system in place between 1940s-1980s. Stratify the student population into different outcomes by selecting them in different education systems.
