Identify the basic human needs

Illustrate how natural and built environments meet human needs

This assessment is an ASSIGNMENT graded by your teacher
Please watch the video above. Your research project will be very similar to the information in the video.
Your research project will be to trace your favourite clothing item from the material they use to you washing it for the first time. Think about where the item comes from (on the tag).
Introduction (you will start with):
- what the item is
- where the item is from
- what material(s) the item is made from
- why it is your favourite clothing item
- why you need the item (think of humans basic needs)
    • List 4 other humans basic needs and:
      • how the environment meets these basic needs
      • how humans build things to meet these basic needs
      • List 2 impacts on the environment based on these basic needs
Criteria
  • describe the ecosystem where the materials come from (if it's made of polyethylene or nylon, look at where you get oil from)
  • what is necessary for the material to grow (ex. water, pesticides) or to extract the material
    • describe the impact of this on the environment
    • describe how the chemicals (ex. pesticides, herbicides) used impact the natural chemicals in the environment (ie. oxygen in the air, bacteria in the soil).
      • Think about the cycles in the environment like the water cycle, nitrogen cycle, etc.
  • List all of the ways chemicals are needed throughout the process to get the item to you (think about materials, processing, dyes, packaging, transportation and you getting the item)
    • list the ways that these chemicals get into the environment
    • list the impact of these chemicals on the natural environment (ie. air, water, soil)
  • Describe the impact of washing the item
    • Think about chemicals in the detergent and then the impact they have on the environment (ie. Phosphates)
    • Describe how the concentration of the detergent has an impact on the environment (ie. packaging, amount of chemicals being released into the environment)
  • Describe how the impact of all of these chemicals can be monitored in the environment (ie. air quality tests, soil tests, water quality tests)
  • Describe what happens when it is time to dispose of the item.
    • Where does it go?
    • Where does it go at the end of its life cycle?
  • What can society do to reduce the impact of the fashion industry on the environment?
  • What can you personally do to reduce your impact on the environment through your choices of fashion?
