Background and context

A concentration gradient is formed when a membrane separates two distinct concentrations of chemicals. Diffusion is the passive movement of molecules across any permeable membrane.

The movement of particles from a greater concentration to a lower concentration is referred to as diffusion. It's a bodily function. In gases and liquids, diffusion can be observed. It happens anywhere there is a concentration gradient.
