Background and context

Arthropods are the most successful phylum of creatures on the planet, in terms of both the number of species and the number of individuals. Because Arthropods are Ecdysozoa members, they all have a protective chitinous cuticle that moults and sheds periodically throughout development and growth. Arthropods are distinguished by a segmented body that aids mobility and connected appendages.
