Document Summary

Ascending aorta begins @ base of left ventricle (aortic semilunar valve) Ascending aorta curves superiorly and posteriorly as the aortic arch over the right pulmonary artery and left main bronchus. Descending aorta begins posterior to the left bronchus and pulmonary trunk, on the left side of t4. Descending aorta passes to the left and anterior to the vertebral colum. The main pulmonary artery lies entirely within the pericardial sac. Arises from the right ventricle (pulmonary semilunar valves) and ascends in front of the ascending aorta. It then courses posteriorly and to the left where it bifurcates at the level of t4/t5 into right and left pulmonary arteries. Courses laterally posterior to the ascending aorta and superior vena cava. Anterior to the oesophagus and right main bronchus to the hilum of the right lung. After entering the hilum it gives of branches to supply the 3 lobes of the right lung. Travels horizontally, arching over the left main bronchus.
