Composition of CT:
-different materials = hence different mechanical characteristics!
-Different proportions of collagen fibres and elastic fibres!
Types of cartilage:
1. Articular = hyaline!
2. Elastic!
3. Fibrocartilage!
Articular cartilage:
-covers ends of long bones!
-Used for stability + function of JOINT!
-1. Distributes load over surface area!
-2. Reduce contact stress!
-3. Smooth, almost frictionless contact surface!
-Can be thin = ankle!
-Can be thick = knee!
= avascular:!
-no blood/nerve supply !
-Only nourishment comes from fluid in joint!
-COMPOSED OF: !
-1. cartilage cell (chondrocyte)!
-2. water!
-3, solid matrix !
-= collagen for strength!
-= proteoglycan for highly hydrated gel!
Remodelling of articular cartilage:
-cannot remodel after lesion !
-Fibrocartilage forms instead!
-Do not have the same ability to ABSORB and DISTRIBUTE load!
-Use ACI procedure to treat this!
Elastic Cartilage:
-Gives tissues support!
