Most of our thinking is outside of conscious awareness. Allows us to think without awareness, for example everyday activities don"t have to consciously think about talking and stringing words together correctly. Automaticity of everyday living (bargh & chartrand, 1999) Driving begins as a mindful activity, taught how to drive, park etc. Have to think and concentrate on what we"re doing. Autopilot allows us to concentrate on other things, like having discussion or thinking about future action.
