Re: Origin Stories
Imagine you are in a Canadian History survey 50 years ago. Imagine what your clothes
are, what your professor looks like. Asking the question of when Canadian history has
begun. Which has changed rapidly over the last even 20 years. 50 years ago we would
have begun discussing when the Europeans arrived.
Reference: 1940s textbook (Stephen Leacock)
o First Chapter: “The empty continent”
There is numerous evidence in oral tradition and archeology that prove it was inhabited
prior to European arrival.
Creation Stories
Still from the exhibits in the Canadian Museum of History the creation story of the
Anishinaabe: the otter travels through the flooded water to retrieve a handful of dirt to be
placed on the back of a turtle thusly creating turtle island. Note: there are different
indigenous creation stories.
o Cree Creation stories (video) : time immemorial (we can’t remember far enough
back to dictate all of the history)
Begins with two people who are walking in another world, on the clouds.
They’ve been walking for quite some time, and every once in a while they
can see through the clouds to find lush greenery, and animals, but they
have no way to reach it, and continue their journey. They see a black
speck in the distance and keep walking towards it, and it gets bigger and
bigger, and it’s a spider, which spins this a boat and agrees to lower them
to the world, but you cannot look down over the edge, the excitement and
curiosity, but the boat lands on the top of a tree with no branches, so they
don’t know how to get down. The animals go by and they request their
help getting down, first the caribou, who says eh has difficulty on rocks
and cannot climb trees. Eventually the fisher agrees. He climbs up, brings
them down, and they reached the earth. The bear teaches them all the
things they need to know, which is why the bear is our brother.
o Skywoman falls from the sky, lands on birds who bring her the rest of the way
down, where she plants plants that she brought with her from the sky like tobacco
and strawberries she becomes the mother of humanity.
Thoughts: What do you notice? Similarities / Differences?
The sky is a common element.
Nature is integral to the story and culture.
Animals are valued and respected in all stories.
