Health is a complete state of physical, mental, and social over-all well-being, not merely the absence of negative health. Health psychology studies how psychosocial factors relate to the promotion and maintenance of health and with the causation, prevention, and treatment of illness. The different approaches to studying health in health psychology include: biological, personality, cognitive, social, behavioural medicine, and biopsychosocial. Stress is a subjective feeling and response produced by events perceived as uncontrollable and threatening (stressor) Stress can be positive ( eustress ) when it helps performance, or negative ( distress ) when it causes upset or illness. Stressors produce a state of feeling overwhelmed, are perceived as uncontrollable, and can be acute or chronic. External sources of stress are environmental, social, interpersonal, organizational, life events, and daily hassles. Internal sources of stress are lifestyle choices, negative self-talk, thought patterns, and stressful personality types.
