Document Summary

Health behaviors: health behaviors are defined as activities that people perform to maintain or improve health and often involves also stopping unhealthy behaviors. These are a large part of health psychology because a lot of diseases in the population are caused by behaviors (e. g. smoking and lung cancer). Competing goals are almost always present and when faced with them we must weigh the importance of the goals both in that moment and long term: habits are automatic behaviors (i. e. they are outside of awareness). They are triggered by the environment and situational cues. Examples of habits are overthinking and staying up late: the transtheoretical suggests that there are 6 different phases is achieving goals: (1) precontemplation, (2) contemplation, (3) preparation, (4) action, (5) maintenance, and (6) relapse. If we want to change behaviours we need to determine which phase we are in because this dictates what action we take.
