Instrumental traits describe individuals who are acting on the world and are usually associated with males. Expressive traits describe individuals who value interpersonal relationships and are usually associated with females. By 4 children have substantial knowledge of gender stereotyped activities. During elementary they come to know gender stereotyped traits and behaviours. Older kids also understand that traits and occupations associated with males have higher social status and that stereotypes are not necessarily binding. By age 5 children judge 1/3 of traits as stereotypically as adults do; by 11 90% Girls tend to be more flexible about stereotypes. Maccoby and jaklin concluded that males and females differed in only 4 areas: verbal ability, spatial ability math achievement, and aggression. Boys tend to be bigger, stronger, and more active than girls; girls tend to have better fine motor coordination and to be healthier. Girls excel in verbal skills, wheras boys excel in spatial ability.
