Criminology: discipline that includes within its scope the making of law, the breaking of law, and the societal reaction to the breaking of law. 3 categories/principles : sociology of law attempt at systematic analysis of the conditions under which criminal law is developed, criminal etiology scientific analysis of causes of crime, penology control of crime. Every criminal has a criminal career (whether long or short: onset: beginning of criminal career, desistance: end of criminal career. Career criminal: one w/ a very long career in criminality; way of life. Prevalence of offending: those who commit at least one crime versus those who do not commit any. Frequency of offending: rate at which criminals commit offences. Civil law: a body of rules & procedures intended to govern the conduct of individuals in their relationship with others. Torts: violations of civil statutes; private wrongs for which the injured individual may seek redress in the courts for the harm they experienced.
