Lesson 5: varieties of syncretism: gnosticism = a movement that developed for several centuries (by the second century) that is very strong and widespread and creates many challenges to proto orthodox. 2nd century = proto orthodox = first orthodox: famous book after the bible = davinci code, da vince code (dan brown) was repressed by the church. The church destroyed it"s writings: dan brown was wrong about gnosticism. He was trying to mix elements of historical truth with a lot of fiction. Many of his claims were not accurate: gnosticism appeared in many form. It represent many challenges to early christianity: gnosticism was to say what was really bible for christians, new testament didn"t come to existent all of a sudden. It took at least 30-40 years before the books of the new testament to be started written: the first books are some letters of paul (year 50)
