Hierarchical nested classification and realization of extinction preceded coherent theories of evolution. Rocks of different age in the same location contain different species. Lamarck"s ideas: observed progressions of similar species in fossil record. Suggested that forms come into being by modification of existing forms. Explains variation in complexity among species, mechanisms not well supported, and poor fit to biological classification: pattern- living world made up of many separate lineage with independent origins. Each lineage progresses towards greater complexity/perfection: process/mechanism- use/disuse, inheritance of acquired characters. Darwin"s ideas: pattern- new lineages constantly being created by existing lineages splitting in two. Decent with modification: tree of life: process- evolution occurs primarily because of the action of natural selection. Natural selection: a process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits. Heritable variation: individuals in a population are born differing in many traits (many features).
