All species use language to communicate with each other. We would only be able to communicate about things of the present. Everything you knew would be experienced directly through smell, taste, hearing, sight and touch. Most researchers agree language and thought have developed side by side. An open and symbolic communication system that has rules of grammar and allows its users to express abstract and distant ideas. Open and symbolic: open: dynamic and free to change create new words and association with words. Example: oxford dictionary is adding words all the time: symbolic: no relationship between the sound and the meaning or ideas they are associated with. They are a symbol of what they mean. It"s not just sounds of words, it conveys meaning that is different from the sound. Example: pizza can"t have a sound that has a relationship with the object, so the word pizza is the symbol for the round eatable food.
