Document Summary
Energy is used to do work = chemical reactions. Sources of energy: light, inorganic compounds (h2, h2s). Autotrophs: self feeding: make organic molecules using inorganic compounds + energy from outside, photoautotrophs: use light energy, co2, to make glucose, chemoautotrophs: use chemical energy, co2, to make glucose. Heterotrophs: different feeding: photoheterotrophs: use light as energy but obtain co2 from food. ie: bacteria, chemoheterotrophs: consume organic molecules as both energy source and carbon source to transform into other organic molecules. ie: animals, fungi, bacteria. Sexual: union of gametes, genetic difference between parents and offspring. Asexual: without sex, no gamete union, little or no genetic difference. Evolution = mechanism driving diversity of life. ie: leaf variation. In this course: introducing organisms with evolution and challenges, anatomy and physiology, ecology, evolution = overarching theme. Biol111 lecture 2 origin of life: 4. 6 bya local supernova explosions, heavy meteorite bombardment until 3. 8 bya.
