Set of wires, shared by the system modules that provides the communication between them. Local buses: provide dedicated connections with cpu, ram, promthat comprise a single processor board. Various microprocessor systems have developed their own standards used for local buses. Backplane buses: used to provide communication between system elements (different boards), each board capable of independent functions. Dedicated bus: provide communication between specified pairs of device. Designed to perform specialized functions (data bus, address bus. ). Allow exploitation of parallelism, simple protocols designed to perform special functions. Non-dedicated bus: involves one bus shared among all modules in the systems = several boards share same address and data lines; requires added address and data strobes. But lower throughout (all traffic on 1 bus) and arbitration required (competition for bus).
