Violence of colonial retreat: gender, community & nation. The violence is often gendered the women"s body is symbol of honour, often the violence directed towards women is stronger, more recurrent, than the violence directed towards men. Famine led to a moral change toward women: sold as slave worker/ =the most affected by the famine/ rise of violence (in corroboration with the rhetoric on the honour symbolism of women"s body) Show the collapse of colonial state: totally absorbed by the warfare. Moral crisis: little ethical everything could be done in order to get food (violence, abandon of children, ) Breakdown of trust between landowners and agriculture workers: hindu blame muslim government, muslim blame the hindu landowners, all blame british rulers. 45-48 = broken community, marked by anger: facilitated the coming of the separation (partition), because little sense of community during those years.
