Document Summary
Neoplatonism was at the centre of numbers of works in philosophy, mainly, but also in various features of sufism and shi"i theology. At first, neoplatonism stood as a competitor to the monotheistic faiths, as it is a construction of a philosophical representation of the creation that some argue is incompatible with the dominant dogmas in the three respective religions. Muslims, a synthesis was made possible by certain mystics through an allegorical understanding of the scriptures. One of the most prominent muslim philosopher who embraced this theory was the 10th century persian abu nasr al farabi. He developed his own cosmological system, basing himself on previous neoplatonist ideas. He is also remembered as having formulated a muslim take on plato"s ideal state : the virtuous. He obviously influenced later thinkers, the most prominent being ibn sina, who discussed and expanded certain ideas of al-farabi.
