The matrix is a massive computer simulation of our entire world. Humans are imprisoned "in this simulation so that they can be controlled by artificially intelligent machines, who seek to assert their supremacy. But humans don"t know that they"re being held hostage or that the matrix is a simulation. For them, the simulation of their world is so realistic and very familiar to the real thing, that they take it to be their world. Some humans live their entire world in the matrix without realizing it was all an illusion. David chalmers explains an age-old philosophical concept called the brain in a vat argument. This is because the brain would be deluded into thinking that it is seeing, smelling, tasting by the electric signals reaching it, when in fact these signals originated from a computer rather than human sense organs.
