Psyc 406: lecture 4: module 1. 3: norms and stats: Descriptive statistics: used to summarize and describe information about a sample from a study. For example, 85% of the students in this psychology class are women. Inferential statistics: can make inferences about the population by looking at data collected about the sample. In other words, methods used to make inferences from observations of small groups of people (sample) to a larger group of individuals (population). Can make inferences from data that isn"t collected. For example, students in psychology are mostly women. Not so much because this population doesn"t reflect the same as much. As the sample becomes less and less representative of the population, you become less and less confident. Larger sample size (n) the bigger the sample, the closer our values will be to our population. Representative sample the more our sample reflects the target population, the more we can infer from it.
