Reality -a matter of agreements, but these agreements can change. Illogical reasoning- people believe in a point of view. Data-systematically collected elements of info about the world aka evidence. Attribute- characteristics or quality of a social actor. Variable- a logical grouping of attributes that described the entities being studied. We can describe the distribution of attributes on variables. We can also find cause/effect relationships in the form of iv-dv. The logic of causation- which attribute of the independent variable(cause) are associated with attributes of the dependent variable. Nomothetic- general- why people as a whole choose mcgill. Choose a topic, observe, find patterns, develop theory, test theories. Two problems: without a question its hard to know what to observe, without a focus/question, we default into common sense theory observation. Assumes you can separate theory and observation having data implies you had a concept in mind. A contradiction between are supposed knowledge and supposed facts.
