Document Summary

Longitudinal axis greater than others: diaphysis [shaft], epiphysis [end], metaphysis [before fusing] Flat bone: usually bones of the skull; one axis is smaller than the rest. Short/irregular bones: made of cortical and cancellous bone, no marrow. Cortical bone: found on external surface of skeletal elements. It is dense, very few pores/airspaces in it. Cancellous bone: spongy bone - found in the ends of long bones. Made up of small rods and plates called trabeculae. Subchondral bone: type of cortical bone covered by cartilage; smoother and shinier than regular cortical bone. It lacks a haversian system; that"s why it"s so dense. Shape of articular surface determines degree of freedom. Amphiarthrosis: slightly mobile joint i. e. ribs and vertebrae. Diarthrosis: mobile joint. i. e. elbow, hip, finger joints. Periosteum: fibrous membrane that covers living bone not covered by cartilage. Its function is bone growth, repair, nutrition, attachment for muscles. Endosteum: membrane that lines the inner surface of living bone.
