Document Summary
Theme 1 module 1 - structure of the cell. We are mosaics of cell types derived from different genetic origins. Describe composition and function of cell membranes. Explain uidity and transport mechanisms in uence movement substances across cell membrane. In our body > there are eukaryotes + bacterial prokaryotes. Prokaryotes > don"t have true nucleus, provide essential functions. Prokaryotic cell: no internal membrane, only has nucleoid (dark region in centre) Macromolecules: nucleic acids (dna into products > rna + proteins) !1: protein > performs metabolic actives + structural element (ex. Agella: carbs > source of stored energy + part of bacterial capsule (plant cell wall) Membranes > separate internal + external environment, protects from toxins. Cell membrane: lipid bilayer formed by 1) hydrophobic core (fatty acid tails) Phospholipid: glycerol molecule + phosphate + 2 fatty acid tails, amphipathic, since it has hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts. Phospholipid tail: hydrocarbon chain of 16 -18 carbons, can have unsaturated/ saturated bonds.
