Document Summary

Eukaryotic cells cells that contains a nucleus; containing most of the genetic material in the cell. Prokaryotic cells cells that does not contain a nucleus. *microorganisms are organisms that are not visible to the human eye* Unit 2: phospholipids are the building blocks of membranes. Cell membrane bound structure containing macromolecules. A cell must be able to distinguish between the external environment and the internal environment. This protects the cell form toxins and controls what comes in and goes out of the cell. A cell membrane is made up of lipid macromolecules called phospholipids. Phospholipids have a hydrophobic head and a hydrophilic tail. A phospholipid is said to be amphipathic because its hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. The hydrophobic head consist of a polar group, phosphate group and glycerol. The hydrophilic tail consists of a 16-18 carbon fatty acid chain. Lipid micelles for absorption of fat soluble vitamins and complex lipids. (form without the need of energy)
