Sandoz disaster = it was a fire that started in a warehouse storing toxic chemicals that led to the pollution of the rhine river and into the north sea (red dye chemical) Over 1000 tonnes of chemicals released - turned the waters red. Importance of basel and rhine to history of sandoz and other swiss chemical/pharmaceutical. Basel is located right where swiss, french, and german borders meet. Basel: a major location of chemical and industrial companies; a centre of the swiss chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Starting in 1939 the production of agro-chemicals. Merged with ciba-geigy and novartis in 1996 all under the novartis name now. No safety measures on storage of chemicals built up over the years. Multiple roles shipping routes, water supply, power generation. Zinc phosphide and dncc stored were some of the major issues. How did the firefighting efforts contribute to the contamination of the rhine river. Firefighters requires 15,000 metres cubed of water.
