Social structure: a relatively stable pattern of social interactions, includes family, education system, and health care systems. Gerontology: the discipline that systematically studies aging; studies subject from two perspectives: how aging affects the individual, how an aging population will change society. Black sheep effect: occurs when group members derogate in-group members whose characteristics threaten positive perceptions of the group. Causes low self esteem in elders, reduces a persons ability to communicate effectively, decreases the quality of interaction and reduces the older person"s sense of control. Occurs because young and middle-aged people feel a distaste for aging; see old age as a time of weakness, sickness, and dying and know little about old age. Social gerontology: a sub eld within the wider eld of gerontology; it focuses on the social side of aging while other sub elds study the physical and biological aspects of aging; included psychosocial, socioeconomic-environmental, and practice-related research. Looks at aging from individual and the social system.
