Mental illness or mental disorder: mental disorder is a specific category/diaganosis (schizophrenia, etc. , mental illness is used in a less specific way (people who are psychologically unwell but not tied to a broader disorder) Patient, survivor, consumer, client, person: patient is a medical term, puts them into the medical system, consumer/survivor is more used for people who dont want to be associated with medical system. Discusses prevalence of each disorder in general pop. Consistent growth since 1st ed. (in the last 65 years, we have about 4x more dis- orders listed than previously) They will tell you the symptoms of the disorder, but does not disclose information about treatment of the diagnosis. Physician must give you a diagnosis from the dsm for ohip to reimburse your treatment. Lack of hard science (disorders are formed on a committee basis - technology is not used to classify these disorders)
