HEALTHAGE 1CC3 LECTURE 1 JANUARY 4, 2018
So what is mental illness exactly?
-open to interpretation. They're ideas subject to change.
-When people commit crimes, others immediately ask, "did they have a mental illness."
-When a celebrity does something "unusual", they're regarded as mentally ill.
Why Mental illnesses are subject to interpretation
-George Bush and St. Joan of arc are people who claimed that God spoke to them. People hearing
this would assume
-That they are crazy and that they have some sort of mental illness. Some people would not think
that they have a mental illness.
-Therefore, it can be hard to determine whether a person is truly mentally ill or not.
How mental illnesses are changing over time
Homosexuality was defined as a mental illness up until the 1980s. Therefore, in those times, Ellen
from the Ellen show would've been considered mentally ill for years (since she is attracted to the
opposite sex). Ideas about mental illness are changing.
We treat ADHD, bi-polar disorder and depression as mental illnesses. These could possibly not
exist in the future.
What does a mental disorder do?
-when we say mental illness, we are talking about a problem in someone's mind. That person's mind is
being negatively influenced by something. For example, depression. Some disorders that cause distress
to the mind, can also cause distress to the physical body.

Ways of thinking about mental illness
-can be seen as a spiritual problem
-as a balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours). Essentially, it can be seen as a person being out of
balance. Some believe that being out of balance can cause mental illnesses.
-From a medical perspective, chemical imbalances in the brain cause stress and other adverse effects.
-Certain people believe that there are no baseline 'dopamine levels'.
-as a somatic problem (meaning that it only has to do with the body and not the mind, some people
think this)
-Mental illness' as a personal problem (moral failing, no such thing as mental illness at all).
-As a problem of consciousness (psychoanalysis) Freud came up with this. Abuse from parents could be a
cause to why you have anxiety as a teenager.
-mental illnesses is a social problem (societal pressure on women to look a certain way that can cause
anorexia)
-The highest rate of mental illnesses are in cities that are poor. Link between poverty and mental
illnesses.
-experts and their views could be worlds apart.
Important information about the Course
-Tests based on lectures and readings. You need the textbook for the online discussions. Tiny little
forums for 5 or 6 people. Every student is assigned to 4 questions. 200 words per question.

We don't have to have class on Thursday unless there is a test or he tells us. Thursday is a spare day. He
will notify us on avenue if we have to attend a Thursday class for any reason
Avenue readings will be on the test. Main idea for each reading. Textbook reading wont be on the
test. Main arguments not minor details.
McMaster email is the only email you should be using if you must email the professor
Slides will be posted in full at the end of the week besides pictures and video at the end of the week.
For this class, MSAF does not reweight, you will have to do the assignment/test you MSAF'ed regardless
at a later date.
-THE TESTS ARE CUMULATIVE. THEY WILL ALL INCLUDE EVERYTHING WE'VE LEARNED
