Maturation is a process, maturity is a state. Maturity = the level / extent an individual has progressed towards adulthood (mature state) Maturation cannot be observed or assessed directly (indicators: variable across the population and difficult to understand, genetic and hormonal influences at play as we mature. Difficult to determine exactly when you start maturity (can"t indicate the day) Individual variation in level maturity attained at a given time (status), when maturation occurs (timing), and rate of maturation (tempo) Individuals may be biologically advanced / lag behind their chronological age: eg. Skeletal age might be greater or less than their chronological age. Timing of onset of maturation and timing of moving through stages of maturation varies. Research requires huge longitudinal studies / mixed longitudinal studies to gain confidence in information. Age doesn"t mean a lot when talking about maturation chronological age only refers to date we were born but doesn"t say much about an individual; not well associated with maturity.
