Overview of pain pathway and the mechanism by which a noxious stimulus can reduce pain. Nociceptive nerve fibers cause sharp acute specific pain followed by a diffuse dull pain. These nerve fibres are how pain signals get into body onto pathway. Dorsal horn where they first synapse and cross midline. Pain control in the midbrain is why pushing pressure points may reduce headaches. The stronger of the two converging signals inhibits the weaker signal. Pain signal comes in, other pain comes in, and their signals meet up at pg for the first time. Pg has descending projection to dorsal horn of interneuron so it can stop the mild pain from reaching the brain. Stronger pain is still able to get up to the brain so it is a selective dampening of pain signals. Descending pag input at the dorsal horn inhibits ascending pain signals. Where signals converge from ascending and descending signals. Pain signals come in, synapse with the interneuron.
