Autonomic system is part of the pns controls smooth + cardiac muscles + glands. Sympathetic trunk ganglia - chains on either side of the vertebral column. Prevertebral ganglia also called collateral ganglia. Pelvic splanchnic nerves: smooth muscles & glands of colon, bladder & reproductive organs. Sympathetic & parasympathetic neurons secrete either: acetylcholine or norepinephrine. Cholinergic receptors: nicoptinic receptors: excitatory bind to na+ channesl, muscarinic receptors: excititory or inhibitory g protein. Postganglionicn neurons in autonimic ganglia and msucle cell membrane nicotininc receptors. Effector cells that respond to acetylcholine from postganglionic neurons muscarinic receptors. Adrenergic receptors: alpha receptors (a1,a2, beta receptors (b1, b2) Diverse actions dependent on the receptor and the tisue. Generalization of the ans: both divisions produce stimulatory and inhibitory effects, most organs receive sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation, opposing effects, produce cooperative effects, general versus localized effects, rest verus activity. Nerve plexuses in the wall of the digestive tract.
