Etymology = how a word develops; history of a word. Definition: (from greek) to carry over, transfer; meta" beyond, over + fe"rein to bring, bear. The transference of the relation between one set of objects to another set for the purpose of brief explanation; a metaphor is a compressed simile. Allows us to explain something complicated or show similarities between things. Simile: something is like something, metaphor: something is something (take out the word like) Definition: a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity: the ship plows the sea. Plow is an agricultural term, visual metaphor that the ship is cutting through the water as if a shovel plows through soil: time is money. Time is valuable like money; money is a commodity like time. Spend time and spend money, can waste time or money, invest/ save both.
