Inter-personal communication
• The end goal of communication is understanding
•
o Communication is a 2-way street, it needs to be well sent and well received for it to be
effective.
o The message is sent to the receiver and the receiver must give feedback so the sender
knows they got the message how they intended it
Barriers to Communication
When the process of communication (above) is not followed in a methodical way.
• Personal barriers
o characteristics of patient and healthcare worker that could come between them
o things like religion, gender, language, age, patient may be guarded because of stress,
patiet does’t respet the healthare orker (all patiets y their foral ae ad
act confident, calm and professional)
• Physical limitations
• Semantic
o medical terminology should be used within the healthcare team but simple language
should be used with the patient
▪ The patient may not know the language the healthcare professional is speaking
with all the medical terms.
o Sometimes people mean one thing and say another
o People all have different experiences so when someone says something they may
correlate it to something else.

want to hear.

Goals of Patient Communication
• Primary:
o Proximal to the purpose of the specific patient professional interaction (gather info,
make decisions, informed consent)
o Communicating a simple procedure has to be clear and may change between patients.
This could also include small talk to get to know the patient and their personality.
• Enabling:
o Elements that affect the ability to achieve primary goals, building trusting relationship
so you can work well with them
o getting the patient to trust you so you can get your message across
• Secondary:
o Biproduct of effective communication
o making the patient comfortable and less anxious
