Music Therapy in the U.S.
1960: National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT)
"the scientific application of the art of music to accomplish therapeutic
aims. It is the use of music and of the therapists' self to influence
changes in behaviour."
Very behaviourally-based, still is.
-
2018: American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) provides some changes
and additions to the 1960 definition …
Music therapy involves the clinical and evidence-based use of music
interventions to accomplish individualized goals.
Research in music therapy indicates its effectiveness in areas such as
overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing
people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment and providing
emotional support for clients and their families.
Music therapists can work with clients, but also with family and
parents of their clients.
§
Today, there's a lot of importance on "evidence" - this goes beyond just
the clinician's behaviour observations.
-
Music Therapy in Canada
1974: Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT)
Music therapy became a recognized, regulated profession in 1974.
CAMT is federally incorporated, self-regulated non-profit professional
association.
It aims to create strong certified music therapists (MTAs) and bring
awareness about professional music therapy services throughout
Canada.
MTA = Music therapist accredited
§
CAMT wants to encourage the practice of music therapy in clinical,
educational and community settings.
The professional body supports MTAs, decides what programs are
appropriate, set exam/internship requirements and standards.

appropriate, set exam/internship requirements and standards.
Exam is the CBMT - developed in the states, but was recently adopted by
CAMT.
Video: Music Therapy at Boston Children's Hospital
Music may help patients engage in ways that would not be possible or at least
very difficult by other means.
E.g., emotional, physical, social
-
This is because engaging in music is very natural.
-
What is Music Therapy
If it's a music therapist using music to provide an intervention, etc. it is music
therapy.
A nurse using music is just a nurse using music, not a music therapist.
-
Music is a universal phenomenon. People of all ages and cultural backgrounds
can listen, perform, create and enjoy music.
It is not a universal language because it has cultural definitions,
meanings, boundaries, etc.
Therefore, if you heard music from a different culture as you it
would not mean the same thing to you as it would for someone
else.
§
Music is present in every culture, which is why it varies.
-
Music is a flexible therapeutic medium because it has many different styles
and a variety of ways in which one can be involved (e.g., composing,
performing, listening).
In a session, you can change the music to meet the needs of the client.
E.g., faster, slower, louder, softer, harder, easier, rhythmic
changes.
§
-
Music is the only thing we do that engages our whole brain.
E.g., hearing, movement, creativity, coordination, etc.
Therefore, you can activate injured areas of the brain and other areas to
still evoke responses.
E.g., a person recovering from a stroke has problems with
emotional responses from the primary emotion areas in the brain,
but music can activate other areas of the brain that can also evoke
emotional responses.
§
Clients do not need to have a music background.
Sometimes background can hinder therapy (analytical).
