NURSING 2L03 Study Guide - Final Guide: Urinary Meatus, Urinary Tract Infection, Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction
Document Summary
Bladder scan- can be used to assess patients for post void residual (pvr) volume, which shouldn"t be higher than 100 ml. The scan is typically performed 10 minutes after a patient has last voided and consists of two components: an ultrasound monitor and a handheld scanner. Closed drainage system- a closed urinary drainage system consists of a catheter inserted into the urinary bladder and connected via tubing to a drainage bag. The catheter is retained in the bladder by an inflated balloon. The drainage of urine is totally dependent on gravity. Distended bladder- a condition in which there"s an inability to urinate even when the urge is felt. Anything that blocks the urethra from allowing the urine to flow, such as an enlarged prostate or kidney stones, can result in a distended bladder. Indwelling catheter- this catheter drains urine from your bladder into a bag outside your body.
