Johan galtung defined three types of violence = direct / structural / cultural. 1 direct violence involves the use of physical force, like killing, assault, sexual violence, beatings, etc. Americas, or the apartheid system in south africa in the 20th century. But structural violence is often very subtle. 3 cultural violence includes the attitudes, beliefs and ideas that we hold about power and violence. These attitudes often justify the direct or structural violence in society. Colonization is not a new concept or idea. Imperialism = political and economic control. Colonialism involves transfer of population = settler societies. Slavery and the encomienda system. Slavery has been a legally recognized system throughout history. It has existed in almost all civilizations in some form (where people have been considered the property of others. ) Encomienda system (1500s- 1700s) legal system used by spanish to control indigenous populations.
