Compare two states, having everything in common except the independent variable. If independent variable is electoral system effects number of women in parliament. Don"t compare for example sweden and norway because they share everything so it proves little. They share a similar history, economy etc something they don"t share is proportional representation and similar percentages of women in parliament. They also differ on many things, so this is not a final solution. Two states that have so much in difference, except the independent variable. Everything is different, different amounts of freedom, political systems etc. except the. High income vs middle to low income etc. Showing that proportional representation isn"t necessarily what cause high numbers of women in parliament. Used to dismiss a hypothesis (prove something isn"t true) Find a case where the dependent variable should occur, if it doesn"t occur then there"s a problem with the hypothesis.
